The majority of us might have experienced being infected by parasites at some point in our lives.
Some parasitic diseases are the cause of life-threatening diseases. These diseases are caused by protozoa and helminths.
Protozoa are single-celled organisms that behave like tiny animals — hunting and gathering other microbes for food. While many protozoa live harmlessly inside your intestinal tract, others cause diseases such as giardia or malaria.
Tapeworms and roundworms are examples of helminths. Helminths are larger parasites that take up residence in your body, living off your nutrients. They or their eggs can settle in your intestinal tract, lungs, liver, skin or even brain.
It is always advised to seek medical care if the following occur:
-An animal or human bite
-A cough lasting more than a week
-Periods of heart palpitation or rapid heartbeat
-A rash, especially if it’s accompanied by a fever
-Swelling and increased pain
-An unusual or a severe headache
